Moderati was founded in May, 2002 as Faith West Inc., the US-based subsidiary of Faith, Inc. – the Japanese company that pioneered the technology behind polyphonic ringtones through its relationships with such wireless carriers as NTT DoCoMo and KDDI. Faith, Inc. established Faith West to deliver mobile content to U.S. consumers, and to support the licensing of Faith Inc.'s software-based sound solutions for mobile phones and other communications and electronic devices globally.

Faith West launched Modtones polyphonic ringtones in June 2002. The company changed its name to Moderati in March of 2005. In February 2007, Moderati was acquired by Bellrock Media. Moderati is headquartered in San Francisco, CA.
